Dorotheus of Gaza
(sixth century)
   Saint and Order Founder.
   Dorotheus founded a monastery near Gaza in the Holy Land. He was the author of a series of instructions on the monastic life which advocated humility and asceticism. They were based on the work of earlier writers and were highly influential. Armand-Jean de rancé, for example, made use of them in his Rule for the Trappist order.
